Certainly interesting to hear the honorable Mr. Lemieux address the issue, and very specifically at that. As you say, it's the official line and as with all official lines one can take it or leave it as they see fit.
Sounds to me like he doth protest perhaps just a bit much.

There's alot of acreage between 'helping tapers fill gaps in their collections'(an absurd idea from a business perspective that no one to my mind has ever suggested is the way to go, except some of the more rabid collectors no doubt) and more obvious motives related to balance sheets and getting stuff out there that will move crisply off shelves.
And for that matter why can't it be both?' Why can't it be, 'Hey we think this is a smokin' performance that could well be very new to a lot of heads ....' There cannot be anything necessarily wrong from a business perspective with acknowledging certain realities. After all there was no delay to say the least in getting the houseboat tapes out, and from the sound of it the tapes that were recently returned will be coming out in a timely manner. As for future releases that are hypothetically in greater circulation, so what? There are no inherent contradictions to explain, there's just a different narrative to supply as rationale: 'While this performance is known to alot of heads the music here is so phenomenal, has been so highly regarded in the community for so long, it clearly called for remaster and release.......'
The 'I didn't even know until a couple of weeks ago ...' comment sounds defensive. Not something that needs to be said one way or another when you think about it.
I certainly have no beef with DL or the Dave Picks series. He actually seems a cool guy- never heard him speak prior to the live on-line chat the other day. This just has the whiff of something other than... transparency.
